Gretchen Bender Total Recall Video Installation

Gretchen Bender

Gretchen Bender (1951–2004), is a pioneering American multidisciplinary artist and influential figure in American art of the late 20th century and a significant observer of the effects of the overabundance of mass media on the human experience.

The groundbreaking fusions of sculpture, video, sound, and performance that she created in New York in the 1980s are known as “electronic theater” installations. These works undermined the influence of corporate imagery on popular culture and anticipated the methods used by many younger artists in the post-Internet era.
